blog first week of school - 01 snowy campus.jpg
I had some errands to run on-campus the other day and figured I'd do them all in one fell swoop and on the way to my aesthetics class. (It has been unkindly cold around here lately, and it takes a long time to pile on the layers.) Here's what IIT looks like on the first week of "spring" classes...

blog first week of school - 02 7-eleven.jpg
First stop in the McCormick Tribune Campus Center (MTCC) is 7-Eleven (7E), the best friend of 24-hour hunger pains. Last year when The Simpsons Movie came out 7E sold some pretty popular Kwik-E-Mart branded items.

blog first week of school - 03 mtcc entrance.jpg
Here we are walking into the MTCC through the revolving doors. Global Grounds, owned by an alum, serves frothy coffees and teas and other caffeinated beverages for the hard worker who deserves a treat.
-
blog first week of school - 04 iit bookstore.jpg
Students check out of IIT's campus bookstore, which is operated by Barnes&Noble and which employs undergraduate students part-time. Spirited cashiers welcomed us to the new semester and explained return policies - great service!

blog first week of school - 05 merch.jpg
In case you're hunting for some collegiate gear, look no further than these bright walls. Whether you wear "Illinois Institute of Technology," "IIT," "Illinois Tech," or a "UniversIITy" pun shirt, you're supporting the Scarlet Hawks.

blog first week of school - 06 center court low.jpg
The path down to Center Court, an auxiliary dining option in the MTCC, may look treacherous but is in fact designed to be anything but. Each set of stairs slants to create a ramp, to make this lower level accessible to all - though the building managers prefer you don't rollerblade to lunch...

blog first week of school - 07 laptop.jpg
Yes, a rather large pane of glass separates this diligent student from the elements, but yet he retains his winter jacket. These chairs are just as comfy as they look.

blog first week of school - 08 studying.jpg
Amidst the hub-bub of lunch hour in the student center - and not far from the student organizations' office - this young lady kicks back with a book and a snack.
-
blog first week of school - 09 center court.jpg
A brighter view of Center Court, which provides both deli-style sit-down and grab-'n'-go salads. I like it for either, and if you come to visit campus, we usually give you and your family passes to eat there or at The Commons (coming soon to a slide near you...)
-
blog first week of school - 10 mtcc bridge.jpg
This area in the MTCC is known as "the bridge." You will often see student organizations perched window-side, and students themselves checking out the crowd below at Center Court. The place to be? Maybe.
-
blog first week of school - 11 student orgs.jpg
Wondering what you'll do as a student here when you're not in the classroom? Our students participate in over 100 organizations which range in focus from general interest and professional interest to service-based.
-
blog first week of school - 12 commons at lunch.jpg
Now this, THIS, is the monster eatery of them all. The Commons is the primary dining facility for our campus community, with dozens of stations and all-you-care-to-eat availability of nutrients (and desserts).
-
blog first week of school - 13 post office.jpg
MTCC is also home to a U.S. Postal Service Office, which also operated with UPS (but not FedEx). Whether you're signing for packages from home or overnighting application materials to graduate schools, this is a one-stop spot.
-
blog first week of school - 14 studying 2.jpg
In a quiet corner of the MTCC, though still loud in color, these students engross themselves in...what, exactly? The funny thing about laptops and reading via PDFs is that no one can guess your taste in knowledge from the front.
-
blog first week of school - 15 hanging out.jpg
To the left you've got your ping-pong and behind that you've got your Dance Dance Revolution and behind that you have e-mail kiosks and to the right and front of those you've got the campus radio station, WIIT. Got (i)it?
-
blog first week of school - 16 arch projects.jpg
I can't tell you whether these projects remain from last semester or christen the new semester, but I can tell you that they were produced by students in the College of Architecture (just a few slides away).

blog first week of school - 17 peek-a-boo.jpg
Peek-a-boo! The slanted space here makes a private space for napping or spying - whatever your preference. Rumor has it Rem Koolhas wanted (or wants) cushions for nap-time here.
-
blog first week of school - 18 global grounds.jpg
Last view of the interior of the MTCC for now. I basically walked in a big circle inside, without exploring its rooms or its levels. That's for another day. Now, let's loop the campus...
-
blog first week of school - 19 skates.jpg
Lacing up between labs or trying to drum up support for a new student organization? I can't say I'm sure what's going on here. Nice hat though.
-
blog first week of school - 20 skates 2.jpg
She's up and at 'em, and I'm heading along on my afternoon of errands. In the background here you can see the MTCC (see previous several slides) and MSV (one of our two residence halls).
-
blog first week of school - 21 mtcc from the east.jpg
The MTCC, viewed from the east side when the sun is setting to the west. Trust me, though, this view is better when the sun is rising. That building SHINES...
-
blog first week of school - 22 hsdc + iit student designers.jpg
Undergraduate architecture students designed, and now construct, the stage for the weekend's collaborative performance with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, a modern dance company and locale for classes.
-
blog first week of school - 23 grad studio.jpg
The archies jump right back into their work after the holiday break. This "slate" looks relatively blank now, but within days it will burst forth with life and bloom beautiful structures. More then.
-
blog first week of school - 24 arch graham resource center.jpg
I've spied on students in the Graham Resource Center before - partially because I am partially hidden behind glass, which makes me feel invisible. I think the basement space's recent renovation is top-dog.
-
blog first week of school - 25 arch subfloor.jpg
Easy enough: The bulletin boards in the basement of the architecture building post classes to come, lectures to attend, jobs to be applied for, and notices regarding recent student and faculty successes.
-
blog first week of school - 26 e1 hallway.jpg
JUMP-ing north across the campus to the Engineering 1 building, I find myself looking south down the hallway as students head to their 3:15-4:30 p.m. classes. (*psst* I'm one of them!)
-
blog first week of school - 27 e1 lobby.jpg
Convening before the last afternoon classroom session, making dinner plans, catching up on missed calls...such are the activities of the E1 lobby patrons.
-
blog first week of school - 28 e1 103.jpg
I sneak a peak into a class. I can't tell you what course it is or who the professor is or where the girl in front got her fabulous shoes, but I can tell you that 22% of IIT's classes have fewer than 10 students.
-
blog first week of school - 29 e1 back lobby.jpg
My visit to a quieter corner of the Engineering 1 yields a studious group. If I had taken this picture at a wider angle, you'd see a renovated aero-engine in back. V.cool.

blog first week of school - 30 e1 hybrid ad.jpg
I think this poster speaks for itself. IIT has some pretty amazing students who do some pretty amazing things. I'll post more about IPROs later...but this car was built out of heart, not for credit.
