IIT's 4th annual Pumpkin launch

It's a bird! It's a plane! No, its not even superman. A pumpkin?? Yes, a pumpkin.Today was IIT's 4th annual Pumpkin launch held at Ed Glancy baseball field.

This year was no let down as teams of students and faculty worked months to create a contraption to launch these long pulpy deep-yellow round fruit (yes, it's a fruit!) in the air straight down to oblivion.

Similar to years past, the event brought in hundreds of students and faculty in appreciation of these massive counter weight arm-swinging devices, all in the name of science, and destruction. Congratulations to all the  team for their dedicated hard work! Happy Halloween!

Please be aware, many pumpkins were harmed in the making of this blog.=)

UPDATE: Big Bertha was this year's champion! The team was composed of members of the IIT student chapters of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and American Society Of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).  They broke years winning launch by 50 feet, setting a new IIT Pumpkin Launch record at 284 feet.  Congratulations!!

I was just wondering what a "punpkin" was. =]

It's an orange pun.

...I'll fix it.
