The 2008 IIT Alumni Service Award
Last weekend, IIT honored the winners of the 2008 IIT Alumni Awards. These individuals have made outstanding contributions to IIT, their professions, and communities, and all were welcomed back to campus to receive their awards.
While all of the recipients are still very involved in the life of their alma mater, one in particular stands out as a generous contributor to the work of Undergraduate Admissions, in particular.
Morton "Mort" Nemiroff (CHE '50) is one of the most devoted and enthusiastic alumni volunteers within recent memory. As a member of the Alumni Admissions Council (AAC), he not only reaches out to prospective students who may not be able to fly the nearly-5000 miles from the Hawai'ian islands to Chicago to visit IIT, but also to other IIT alumni to encourage him to "spread the word" about our university - something that he does very well indeed!
Three current IIT students who met Mort at college fairs and high school visits in Hawai'i in the past, and who have kept in touch over the years.
Not only has Mort recruited and sent dozens of students from his home state of Hawai'i to IIT over the course of the past three decades...but he also brings his Hawai'ian culture - and shirts! - to visit IIT once in awhile!

Mort croons a traditional Hawai'ian song on Friday in the Office of Undergraduate Admission, accompanying himself on the ukulele.
If you'd like to read some of Mort's own words about his work as an IIT alum, check out the Alumni Volunteers section of our website.
Perhaps someday you'll join him in reaching out to the world, as well?
